A few weeks ago we had a heatwave and we were thinking if the hotter a place the poorer it is. We could collect data to test our hypothesis thanks to the recent advances in open data and scraping technologies.

GDELT – the best source for news addicts
We love reading news but who’s got the time to read ALL articles? Luckily, the Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone, GDELT for short, scrapes tons of news articles and other sources of information. And yes, you can access their data via an API or very convenient Python and R SDKs.

Can you beat a robot?
We made a graphic summary of our latest post, How to treat your robot? Inspired by The Pudding and sites telling stories using data and other unconventional tools, we made a short graphic teaser to our post. As usual, we used open source tools. This time the entire graphic work was made in GIMP, images were converted to JPEG format with ImageMagick and the text was written with the free Classic Robot Font.

City name lego
City names in Hungary are like lego parts. You can put together two ore more words almost freely and get an existing city name. However one can easily discover some pattern of the names, i.e. their reasonable proportion ends with the same word. Our project aims to map the most frequent endings of the municipality names of Hungary.
